In a world that is fascinated with tinsel, lights, and Santa Claus, the season of Advent is an opportunity for believers around the world to read and reflect on the birth of Jesus, our Savior.
‘For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.’ – Isaiah 9:6-7
As the Advent season begins, we are invited to pause, reflect, and embark on a journey together—one that follows the story of Christ’s birth and brings hope, peace, joy, and love to life.
Earlier this year, several ministries came together for children and families and launched ‘The Week’ initiative, which brought thousands of believers together during Easter to reflect on and celebrate God’s redemptive plan for mankind through Jesus. Families journeyed together through the week, every day from Palm Sunday to Resurrection Day, celebrating and reflecting on all that Jesus accomplished for us through His death, burial, and resurrection. The resources put together are available on theweek.life. You can also read the introduction article to learn more about the project.
We are now looking forward to another major event in the church calendar, Christmas. We are expanding our resources to help the church, and especially children and families, engage in the significance of this event—that the promised Messiah came as Immanuel, God with us, to save His people from their sins (Matt 1:21-23).
Each year, the Advent Family Devotional seeks to engage families, young people, churches, and communities worldwide in a shared Advent journey that strengthens faith, builds community, and celebrates the birth of Jesus. The Family Devotional is designed to unite believers of all ages around Christmas and Easter as we prepare for the 2000th anniversary of Jesus’ resurrection in 2033.
Advent: A Journey to Connect, Reflect, and Celebrate
Advent is a great opportunity as a family to connect with those around us who are yet to know Jesus. Just as families across generations came together for THE Week to remember Jesus’ sacrifice, this Advent Devotional brings us into a shared reflection on the profound hope of his coming.
This year’s devotional follows the weekly themes of Advent:
- Week 1 (December 1-7): Hope
- Week 2 (December 8-14): Joy
- Week 3 (December 15-21): Love
- Week 4 (December 22-24): Peace, and concludes on
- Christmas Day (December 25) with the Celebration of Christ’s arrival.
Each lesson is structured to be accessible and engaging for children, teens, and adults, making Advent an intergenerational experience of discovery and growth.
Each week includes:
- Introductory Question—Begin with a simple, engaging question that invites everyone to reflect on and connect with the weekly theme.
- Bible Story—Delve into a core Advent story, allowing Scripture to speak to each participant uniquely.
- Listening, Praying, and Journaling—Provide time to listen, reflect, and capture thoughts or prayers, encouraging each person to share their journey with God.
- Sharing and Praying—Close with group sharing and prayer, building deeper connections through vulnerability, encouragement, and mutual support.
You have a couple of options to download the devotional:
- The pdf document for all the weeks and the pdf document for each week,
- The pdf document of the Quick Read Cards of the devotional and weekly Quick Read Card.
Building a Global Movement Together for Children and Families
This devotional is more than a resource; it’s a way to build community. Here are some ways you and your community can use this devotional to foster connection, inspire conversations, and share the Advent experience globally:
- Social media reflections: Post highlights, questions, and personal reflections from each week’s theme to encourage conversation and sharing. Use hashtags like #TheWeekAdvent, #Advent, #TheWeekLife, to connect with the global community and see how others are reflecting on the same themes.
- Virtual groups: Create online spaces for friends, family, and church members to gather weekly to discuss the devotional. These virtual groups can help unite families across distances and provide a supportive community of faith.
- Prayer and reflection challenges: Set up a shared Advent calendar with daily reflection prompts or simple acts of kindness that families can complete together. By sharing responses or photos, families can build bonds and see God’s love in action.
- Spiritual get-togethers: Host or attend virtual worship gatherings, Christmas carol nights, or prayer services. By streaming these events, you can make the Advent journey accessible for friends and family, even if they’re halfway around the world.
- Acts of service and kindness: Encourage community members to reach out through acts of service. Partner with other families, churches, local charities or ministries, creating an Advent season marked by generosity, compassion, and practical love in action.
Make it a multigenerational event—all generations reaching all generations in their own unique way.
Join a Global Movement toward 2033
As we approach Christmas and celebrate the birth of Christ, we are also looking forward to the 2000th anniversary of his resurrection in 2033. The Advent Family Devotional is a part of this larger movement, encouraging all believers to walk together in faith and mission. Through these weekly gatherings, activities, and reflections, we can inspire the next generation to know and love Jesus, while strengthening our communities in the process.
Imagine what it would look like if families, churches, and individuals across the globe embarked on this Advent journey together. Let’s make this season one of unity and hope, sharing the message of Christ’s birth far and wide. Connect with us at theweek.life to download the Advent Family Devotional 2024, and join us in creating a global, intergenerational celebration of the life and mission of Jesus.
Let’s journey through Advent together—across nations, generations, and digital spaces—united by the joy, love, peace, and hope that Jesus brings to us all.
