Lausanne’s Fourfold Vision
In a complex world, the mission is still clear.
The world is changing rapidly. The needs are great, the pressures are many, and it can be easy for the church to lose focus or emphasize one part of God’s global mission at the expense of another.
Lausanne’s fourfold vision helps us hold together aspects of God’s mission that must never be separated: the gospel, disciple-making churches, Christlike leadership, and kingdom impact in every sphere of society.
At the heart of Lausanne’s fourfold vision is one small but powerful word: every.
- The gospel for every person
- Disciple-making churches for every people and place
- Christlike leaders for every church and sector
- Kingdom impact in every sphere of society
This is the calling of the whole church, taking the whole gospel to the whole world.
Because the mission is so great, it cannot be carried out by a few alone.
It calls for the whole body of Christ—every believer, every church, every generation, and every community—to take part.
01 — The Gospel
The Gospel for Every Person

Every person needs the good news of Jesus. As Scripture reminds us, “Salvation is found in no one else…” (Acts 4:12). People need to see their lives within the bigger story of creation, fall, redemption, and consummation. Yet how we communicate that story must keep evolving—finding fresh language for different cultures and a new generation.
Today, a key frontier is the digital world. How do we share the gospel, disciple believers, and build community in online spaces—while not neglecting those with limited access?
Globally, the need remains urgent. The percentage of Christians has remained at just over 30% for a century. Many Muslims and Hindus still do not know a Christian, and most missionaries serve already-reached areas.
The message has not changed—the essence of the gospel, and the need of each person for the gospel—but how we communicate it must.

02 — Disciple-Making
Disciple-making Churches for Every People and Place
The second aspect of Lausanne’s fourfold vision is disciple-making churches for every people and place. The emphasis is clear: “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).
At its core, the need is to see followers of Jesus spiritually formed and matured within Christian community. This may look like home groups, workplace discipleship, or small groups within larger churches, but the goal is unchanged.
When Jesus spoke of a disciple, he meant wholehearted commitment—abiding in his word, obeying his commands, loving others sacrificially, bearing fruit, and putting him above all else.
In a rapidly changing world, we need fresh thinking on how disciple-making communities can effectively reach and connect people in every context.
03 — Leadership
Christlike Leaders for Every Church and Sector
The third aspect of Lausanne’s fourfold vision is Christlike leaders for every church and sector.
Mission today is no longer “from the West to the rest,” but from everywhere to everywhere. Yet two challenges remain: raising enough leaders, and forming leaders with Christlike character.
In many rapidly growing regions, traditional training alone cannot keep pace—it is often too slow, costly, and limited in reach. At the same time, we must ask how to combine the scalability of digital tools with the depth of life-on-life discipleship that Jesus modelled.
This calling extends beyond the church into every sphere—workplaces, communities, and public life—where believers live out their faith.
The need is urgent: not just more leaders, but leaders shaped in the likeness of Christ.
04 — Kingdom Impact
Kingdom Impact in Every Sphere of Society
The fourth aspect of Lausanne’s fourfold vision is kingdom impact in every sphere of society.
Jesus begins the Great Commission by declaring that all authority belongs to him, and then calls his followers to make disciples who obey all he commanded. Our mission, therefore, is inherently holistic. The gospel we share, the churches we plant, and the leaders we form must reflect this—living all of life under the lordship of Christ.
Today, younger leaders are more attuned to embracing this holistic vision. There is strong passion for justice, creation care, peacemaking, and reconciliation.
Yet alongside this, a renewed energy for the whole vision is also needed—ensuring that kingdom influence is held together with the call to the gospel for every person, disciple-making communities, and Christlike leadership.

When the Whole Church Lives the Whole Gospel

When the whole church lives the whole gospel, our witness becomes more faithful, more integrated, and more fruitful.
This invites an honest question: Where are the gaps? Who is missing?
Answering that requires more than strategy. It calls for a posture of listening—not occasional, but intentional and ongoing. Listening across cultures, contexts, and expressions of the body of Christ. Listening with humility, recognising that no part of the body can say to another, “I have no need of you.”
As we lean into this posture, something begins to take shape. We move from fragmentation toward integration. From isolated efforts toward shared mission.
We begin to see:
- The gospel proclaimed with greater clarity
- Churches formed as communities of deeper discipleship
- Leaders shaped in Christlike character
- Believers living out their faith with courage and credibility in every sphere of society
This is the beauty of the fourfold vision. It gives us a way to hold the whole together—to resist narrowing the mission of God to one expression, and instead recover its fullness.
In a world marked by complexity and distraction, the call is clear: to keep the main thing the main thing—to live as the whole church, bringing the whole gospel to the whole world.
