Becoming a Global Disciple

Learning from the Global Church

About the Plan

One of the great temptations in discipleship is to assume that the way we have experienced God is the only way, or the best way, that God works.

We may not say this out loud, but we can live as though it is true. We read Scripture through the lens of our own culture. We form expectations about worship, leadership, prayer, mission, discipleship, and church life based on what is most familiar to us. Without realizing it, we can confuse our culture’s expression of Christianity with Christianity itself.

But the body of Christ is far bigger than any one culture can capture.

God has given wisdom, courage, resilience, faith, theological insight, prayerfulness, endurance, and creativity to believers all over the world. Christians in contexts of persecution may teach us about costly faith. Believers in communal cultures may help us see the limits of individualism. Young churches may remind us of the power of bold witness. Older traditions may deepen our sense of rootedness. Brothers and sisters from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Europe, North America, and Oceania all have gifts to bring.

This four-day plan invites you to practice global learning as a vital part of discipleship. Not learning about the global church as a curiosity, but learning from the global church as family. As we listen with humility, receive with gratitude, and discern together, we become more whole.
