Debriefing CapeTown2010: Relationships

Jon Hirst 15 Nov 2010

Each of us knows that relationships are the most important aspect of an event or cause. We know that in our minds, but many times we don’t live like it is the case. What do I mean? We say that relationships are what make events like Lausanne’s congress in Cape Town, South Africa so critical, but in the end few of us take those relationships very seriously.

It isn’t because we don’t want to. We have every intention of writing that email, talking on Skype or responding to a person’s ideas. We just don’t. We let the urgent matters of the moment rule and these relationships that matter to God get left on the fringes of our schedule.

But in this case that doesn’t have to happen. A key part of debriefing your experience at Cape Town 2010, at a GlobaLink event or via the Internet is to take real intentional time to follow-up with those who you built relationships, engage them about your life and ministry and ask God how why He brought this new relationship into your life.

You will find that the lessons from the event become clearer if you share them with others instead of expecting to process them in your own head. You will also find that your path is easier to walk with new friends that will undoubtedly have very unique perspectives but share some of the same experiences you just walked through.

So here is your next debriefing assignment:

  1. Identify the 2-3 key people that God allowed you to build a relationship with during the events of the last month.
  2. Ask God how He would have you continue to develop that relationship. For some it might be email, others might require phone, letters or even meeting in person.
  3. Make a quick plan for how you will intentionally work that relationship into your life over the course of the next few months.
  4. Pray that God will use your efforts to bear fruit in your life, their life and His Kingdom.
  5. Share with others what you are learning as your relationships develop.
