Africa is arguably the most diverse continent in the world. It represents nearly 2,000 languages, and is home to the largest number of French speakers in the world. There are over twenty African countries where French is the official language, including the second largest African country, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the smallest African country, the Seychelles. The three biggest challenges faced by Francophone Africa are political instability and corruption, armed conflicts and Jihaist threats, and poverty and social inequality.
Despite these challenges, Christianity in Africa is growing at a rapid rate and in the last decades has recognised their own contribution as a mission resource and not merely a mission receiver. With the shift in the centre of Christianity to the majority world, Africa is an important launching point for sending workers and a think tank for missions issues. Aiding that important calling, Lausanne plays an important role in assisting to address critical issues of our day (discipleship, evangelism, justice, diaspora, orality, poverty, and more), and provide a platform for collaboration. This report contextualizes the findings of the State of the Great Commission Report to Francophone Africa. It outlines the unique opportunities and challenges within the region, exploring how these factors can inspire enhanced collaboration for global mission.
