Holmes graduated from Louisiana Tech University in civil engineering with a math minor. He was a member of Pi Mu Epsilon Math Honor Society and Chi Epsilon Honor Fraternity. He was awarded Outstanding Senior by the Louisiana Tech chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Fundraising experience began in 1978 with Cru where he served as director of development. In 1988 Holmes cofounded Evangelical Development Ministry, providing counsel since to 120 ministries, including Wycliffe US, Frontiers, and The JESUS Film Project, and cross-cultural training in 14 countries.
Holmes has a passion for teaching biblical stewardship. He serves as deacon, missions committee member, and Bible study teacher. He is married to Teresa since 1977 and they have five children and three grandchildren.
