The Value of the Movement and What’s Happening Now

Doug Birdsall 28 Jul 2011

Cape Town 2010 brought together an amazing group of men and women to serve as stewards.  Recently on a call with those stewards, they talked about their desire to stay connected to The Lausanne Movement.  When I asked what they valued about Lausanne, they mentioned four compelling factors:

  • Friendships that give them a sense of global connectedness and belonging
  • Access to ideas and information that provide a sense of intellectual stimulation
  • A global perspective on “my little corner of the world”
  • A sense of hope and strength that comes from being a part of a larger Movement

As evidence of the impact of Cape Town 2010 and the growing Lausanne Movement, I receive reports every week of maturing friendships, developing partnerships, and stimulating consultations from around the world.  I pray the following progress report will encourage you, as it does me, as we see God on the move throughout our world.

Lausanne Gatherings and Gatherings of Lausanne-related Networks.  The following is a list of the many gatherings that have taken place in recent weeks:

  • Now and Next Theological Consultation on Children, Nairobi
  • Planning meeting for November Eurasian Consultation, Kiev
  • Australia Lausanne Committee Consultation, Sydney
  • Korea Lausanne Committee Consultation, Seoul
  • U.S. Lausanne Gathering, Orlando.
  • Meeting with French Lausanne Leaders, Paris
  • Forum of Bible Agencies International, Edinburgh
  • Lausanne Researchers Network, Sao Paulo
  • Latin American National Gatherings in nine countries
  • Consultation with WCC representatives to Cape Town 2010, Geneva
  • Consultation with Swiss participants in the Congress, Lausanne
  • Planning meeting for September Middle East Consultation, Cairo
  • Norway Lausanne Consultations, Oslo
  • Meeting with 1000 Russian Pastors, Moscow
  • Asian Leadership Consultation on Evangelism, Ulan Bataar

Lausanne Biennial Leadership Meeting:  From the 20th to the 24th of June, 140 members our Lausanne global leadership community will meet in Boston.  Please be praying with us about our priorities for the meeting and for God’s wisdom and guidance.  The priorities include:

  • Vision and Direction for the future of The Lausanne Movement
  • Celebration and Evaluation of Cape Town 2010
  • The Cape Town Commitment, which will serve as our road map for the coming decade.  We want to ensure that the priorities of the Movement are aligned with this historic document.
  • Lausanne Leadership and Structure to help strengthen Lausanne’s infrastructure, budgeting and calendaring for the next three years.  Additionally, we will ratify appointments of new leaders for our Board of Directors and as International Deputy Directors.

Like the younger leaders on the recent steward call, it is also my desire that Lausanne will continue to provide the context for friendships around the globe, for stimulating ideas and great resources, for global perspective on our part of the world, and for a sense of hope as we bear witness to the glory of the gospel in our world.
