Creation Care and the Gospel:
Reconsidering the Mission of the Church

The latest publication from the Lausanne Library

What does the gospel have to do with creation care?

From Augustine to Martin Luther, theologians and preachers recognized that God speaks to his people through ‘two books’, namely the Bible and his created world. In this volume, an international group of theologians, scientists, and creation care practitioners explore what this ancient truth means for us today. They show how care of God’s creation must be an integral part of the mission of Christ’s church, an expression of joyful worship, and a path of hope for a world in desperate need of it.

Anyone who has followed developments in evangelical circles in the last few years willo knwo that ecological concerns can no longer be considered secondary in the mission of the church… As someone deeply convinced that integral mission is related to the totality of God’s creation and to every aspect of life, I wholeheartedly commend this book. • rev-dr-joel-c-hunterWhat a great breadth of information and holiness is contained in these pages! I found it both educational and inspiring, as well as timely and important.’–Rev Dr Joel C Hunter, Senior Pastor, Northland, A Church Distributed, USA
  • john-weaverThis comprehensive exploration of the environment, and of human interaction with the natural world, challenges our understanding of mission. It encourages us to take a holistic approach to discipleship, affirming God’s desire to see the shalom of creation, and to recognize God’s identification with the world through the Incarnation.’–John Weaver, Chair of the John Ray Initiative: Connecting Environment, Science and Christianity

This volume compiles the work of biblical scholars, theologians, biologists, environmental researchers, and community organizers who met in Jamaica in 2012 for the Lausanne Global Consultation on Creation Care and the Gospel. Participants from 23 countries as diverse as Argentina, Bangladesh, Benin, and Canada gathered for five days to pray, talk, and reflect on the state of the planet—the home in which we live—and on the role and ministry of the church in caring for God’s creation. The 350-page book published as a result of the consultation includes topics like environmental missions, climate change, economics and cities, and features a variety of case studies from around the world.
