Open For Ministry

21 Apr 2010

One of the most exciting and frightening aspects of the Internet (and blogging in particular) is the openness and direct connection that it gives you with the world. I’m sure many of you have experienced that and have struggled to balance your desire to engage with others and share your heart with the concern about sharing too much.

Isn’t it the same as we serve as leaders in our local context around the world? Leaders live in a world where privacy is challenged every day by the demands of ministry. So what is the role of openness and authenticity in ministry across cultures?

One of the contributors to the Lausanne Global Conversation, Sue Plumb Takamoto, shares about this very topic in her posting called, “Authenticity: A Cultural or Biblical Value?”

She raises some powerful questions that will challenge you to consider your culture and what you have grown accustomed to accepting as Biblical leadership qualities. One of the things I love about this article is that she has examples of authentic leadership in cultures around the world. Sue does much more than say authenticity is important – she gives each of us examples to consider.

Participate: The question is still out there and we need you to jump in. Is authenticity a cultural or Biblical value? Click on the link and share your thoughts!

Engage: As you read her article, consider how authentic and open your leadership style is. Once you have reflected ask yourself how God might be leading you to make authenticity a greater priority.

Own: The next time you see a leader step out and be authentic, bring it up to them. Ask them why they are acting that way and learn from their actions and perspective.
