Persecution is Not the End of the Story: The Unstoppable Growth of the Church in Iran

Sharing his testimony of imprisonment and perseverance for the sake of the Gospel in Iran. Fathi recalled the explosive growth of the Iranian church, which began with just 500 Muslim-background Christians in 1979, and has now reached over one million people. Despite intense persecution and the martyrdom of key leaders, the church has continued to thrive. Evangelism has become a lifestyle for Iranian believers, with members of the underground church bringing many to Christ on a weekly basis.

Fathi emphasized that persecution is not the end of the story, but a part of it. He reminded listeners that “the greatest manifestation of love is suffering” and that Jesus’ promise to build His church stands firm even in the face of opposition. He shared personal experiences of miraculous moments, where God’s power and presence were evident, even in the darkest of times. Fathi encouraged the global church to remain steadfast, recognizing that “we are all part of the story” and urged Christians to keep praying and supporting those facing persecution, knowing that the victory belongs to God.

Recounting her experience as a church planter in Iran, despite the harsh persecution, imprisonment, and the constant threat of government opposition, Akhavan testified that the Word of God continues to spread. She described how, through prayer and fasting, God opened doors for her and her team to plant churches in Esfahan and seven surrounding towns. Despite being arrested on December 26, 2010, and spending time in solitary confinement, Akhavan shared how God gave her strength, reminding her, “You are acting like I am dead.” In that moment, she praised God with the song “In Jesus’ Name, We Have Victory,” declaring His faithfulness even in the darkest times. After her release, Akhavan returned to continue the mission God had given her, planting the seventh church as He had promised. She encouraged believers worldwide, affirming that no matter the opposition, “Whatever the opposition the church faces, the Word of God continues to spread.”
